Last Summer, I had an intense desire to start a garden.
Yes, you read that right. Summer.
I’m not the greatest at planning ahead at times.
So this year, the gardening bug hit me early and Ben made me a simple garden box – something that was easy for me to reach from my wheelchair, and wasn’t going to cost us a fortune.
I wanted to make sure I could reach the plants from all four sides of the box, so we went with a 6″x2″2″ rectangle, made from pre-treated lumber and sealed with plastic landscape sheeting (to protect the soil from the chemicals in the wood). A pretty easy project with an extra pair of hands (my sister) to help hold pieces in place.
Ben put the accessible garden box together using four 2x12x6 boards, a 4x4x8 post for the corners, 3-inch deck screws, and the brand new cordless drill that I bought as bribery for putting up with my thousands of questions, inability to visualize the finished product, and generally being a pain in the ass during the entire process.
It should have been a one-day process, from cutting the lumber to moving the assembled box out to the yard. Unfortunately, it became a week process because Ben broke 3 drill bits the first day, and we had to wait until the next weekend to finish it.
The next step is of course, filling the garden box.
That post is coming soon (since we’re still filling it. It’s been an adventure!)
